America’s Early Immigrants

March 23rd, 2010 by admin

From 1892 to 1924, the United States experienced one of its fastest paced periods of European immigration.  It was the time period when a large number of European immigrants arrived in America after passing through the Ellis Island immigration center.  So many immigrants passed through Ellis Island that it is estimated that approximately 1/3 of all Americans have an ancestor that was processed there.   It has been written many times that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island contributed greatly to the success that our country experiences today.   Because these new Americans had extraordinary work habits they were able to build this country into the success it has today. Interestingly, some of these new Americans started up their own businesses that included Miami Translation Services companies. Other immigrants became important scientists or inventors. There were other immigrants that went on to star in famous movies, Broadway shows and conduct large orchestras.  These are just a few of the met6hods that some of the new Americans did their part to make our country great. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, immigrants usually came to the United States by ship.  One these boats, the conditions were almost intolerable and the trip might last a week or longer to cross the sea to get to New York Harbor.  As the large boat that the immigrants traveled on finally pulled into New York harbor, the immigrants would rush to see the Statue of Liberty. Of course, as the travelers saw the statue of liberty and the New York skyline they knew that their long journey was well worth the money and time.Everyone who passed through Ellis Island was both touched and disturbed by the whole life changing event.  That’s because the journey was difficult. Those migrating to the United States by boat often tolerated wretched conditions that only helped to strain camaraderie and closeness.  It should not be a revelation to anyone that there were happily married couples that within days wanted divorce decrees by the ship’s captain.  But keep in mind that these soon to be American citizens had a vision.  All of these people who came through Ellis Island believed that their efforts to pursue individual freedoms in America were well worth the trip.  And over time, many of them did make a better life for themselves in their new country.Everyone who came to the U.S. had great concerns that caused stress. They were worried about what might happen on Ellis Island. A few immigrants even thought that the U.S. government could seize their paperwork including Legal Translation and other important documents that we needed at Ellis Island.  If you were one of these people, you likely had to sell off all of your property and belongings to pay for the trip to the United States.  It is true that the majority of these immigrants sold everything they owned to come. Some were also afraid of what they would find after they left Ellis Island. Unfortunately, at this time most of the immigrants didn’t speak English and there weren’t many Atlanta Translation resources available.  Just imagine if you made the trip.  You wouldn’t know how to assimilate and it would take you weeks or months to make the adjustment to the New York lifestyle. In 1924, the U.S. Congress voted to change to limit the number of people that it would grant citizenship in the legendary 1924 immigration act.
