Fry’s Electronics: A place to meditate and reflect

May 13th, 2010 by admin

The best job I’ve ever had came to me on a summer day in high school. I was walking with a friend and we stopped at a frozen yogurt place called Yummy Yogurt. We walked through the door and happened upon a strange scene. The only employee working there and the manager were in the middle of a shouting match. Apparently, one employee had gotten fired after a week of not showing up to work, which the remaining employee was outraged about it. He stormed out of the yogurt shop, shoving past me and my friend. The manager looked at us. We looked back. After a five second silence, the manager said, and I’ll never forget this, ‘Alright then, you boys look like you need jobs. Have at it!’ And he stormed back into his office, throwing the keys to the cash register on the counter. We shrugged and got behind the counter. We served our first few customers with no training. It took a couple days to figure out how to open the cash register. In that time, we kept it in empty frozen yogurt cups. We had a cup for each of the different coins and bills. It was like being the bank in Monopoly, but with real money! The pay was minimum wage, but the tip jar always piled up, and the manager was never around. We worked on our terms, serving people the largest small frozen yogurts that they’d ever seen. Everyone loved us, I can say it was a great job in the Tamworth area. Honestly, my self esteem hasn’t been higher than when I worked at Yummy Yogurt.
