How Can I Recycle My Phone

January 18th, 2010 by admin

Have you ever gotten a new mobile phone and thought what a waste in a way because your “old” one still had a lot of use left in it?  Pondering it, did you think “I wonder if there is a way to recycle my phone“?  There are actually several ways to accomplish this and help others in the process.  Currently, a search for ways to recycle my phone online will produce literally millions of results.  Leading the results are charitable efforts to recirculate cell phones.  That old cell phone can go to soldiers or abused women, it can be used with working parts of others to make new phones, and it can be broken down and the metals recycled.

Cell phones contain toxic components like mercury and lead.  However, they also contain gold, silver and platinum.  With over 205.000.000 cell phone users upgrading and replacing their phones periodically, that has culminated 650,000,000 retired phones that are in municipal landfills.  The phones are there, which means the toxic components are there and are getting into the water and food sources.  Not only will it keep those toxins out of the eco-system, it will reduce the need to produce more of the metals.  By today’s strip mining process, obtaining one clean ounce of gold produces 79 tons of toxic waste.  Not sure what 79 tons would be like?  Just imagine 35 cars stacked on top of each other.  Almost every business in existence is making an effort to “go green”.  Programs are being implemented to recycle everything from paper to equipment.  This is the perfect opportunity for an individual to contribute to the ongoing mission to preserve resources and protect ourselves as well as the planet.

Many companies that recycle wireless products sponsor fundraising campaigns to encourage the process.  Some buy from individuals, though there may be a minimum to submit for purchase at one time.  For whatever reason you think “I want to recycle my phone”, there are profitable ways to do so.  Regardless of the manner it is recycled, it is profitable for the planet and it’s inhabitants.  Don’t stop at recycling though, be sure to spread the word and inform others.
